Mr. LIU Heng
Lecturer
LIU Heng is currently a faculty at the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. He is the Principal Percussion of the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) Orchestra, Executive Director of the China Percussion Association, and Signed Composer by Edition Svitzer Publisher.
LIU studied percussion with his father LIU Yaguang, a percussion professor at Xi'an Conservatory of Music, from a young age. He was admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music in 2005, and studied under Professor LIU Gang and Professor LI Biao, earning his bachelor's and master's degrees. He also won first place in the National Youth Percussion Competition "Professional Youth Group". His Chinese traditional percussion work Wangyue won the first prize in the Central Conservatory of Music Chinese National Music Festival "Chinese Traditional Percussion Works Competition".
As an active percussion performer on the world stage, LIU has been invited as a jury at major percussion music festivals both domestically and internationally. He has held master classes and solo concerts, such as the Italian International Percussion Competition and Music Festival, the International Network Percussion Competition, the Greek International Percussion Festival, the National Youth Percussion Competition, the World Chinese Youth Percussion Competition, and the NCPA International Percussion Festival, etc.
LIU is also committed to percussion composing. Currently, he has composed nearly 40 pieces, including solo, ensemble, concerto, electroacoustic music, and percussion works. His works have been frequently performed around the world and have been included in the international competition repertoire.
LIU is also full of enthusiasm and research on the performance and teaching of percussion in the world. He has participated in the publication of China's first African Drumming method African Drumming Grading Test Method, and the first Latin percussion method Latin Percussion Grading Test Method, and has held percussion masterclasses in several conservatories of music in China many times. His courses cover everything from classical percussion to popular percussion, from world percussion to improvisational music, and his breadth of musical thinking has made his classes deeply loved by teachers and students. LIU also wrote a column titled Liu Heng Talks about Music in the Music Weekly, promoting percussion knowledge for music practitioners and enthusiasts.
Now, Liu Heng, as an international artist, cooperates with the German percussion and cymbal brand Meinl Percussion/Meinl Cymbals, the American marimba brand Marimba One, the American drumhead brand Remo, the American drumstick brand Innovative Percussion, the Chinese drumstick brand Fan Mallets and Hanqi with his outstanding percussion expertise.
