Prof. LIU Songhu
Professor
Dr. LIU Songhu, a world-renowned baritone, serves as a Professor of Opera and Voice at the School of Music, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, a soloist at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, and an Associate Professor at the Academy of Opera of Peking University. He is the very first Chinese gold award winner of the International Vocal Music Contest of Art Song held in Germany. For several decades, Dr. LIU has been employed as a soloist at Staatstheater Nürnberg and as a guest lecturer at Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg in Germany. He has played leading roles in more than fifty operas like La Bohème, Il Barbiere di Siviglia Carmen, Die Zauberfloete, Eugen Onegin, L’Elisir d’amore, Le Nozze di Figaro, Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Cosi fan tutte, Don Giovanni, Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg, Werther, La Finta Giardiniera, Faust, Pagliacci, Lucia di Lammermoor, La Traviata, Il Trovatore, Rigoletto, and Pique Dame. Up to now, European theatres and operas have witnessed his performances more than six hundred times, all of which have been hailed by world media.
He has won prizes in ten international vocal music competitions: Opernwelt Magazine Yearbook (Germany) “Nachwuchssänger des Jahres” (Young Singer of the Year) Award; Bayerische Rundfunk “La Voce-Liedwettbewerb” (Lieder) Competition (Germany) First Prize; Concours International du Chant de Toulouse (France) Frist Prize; Barcelona International Vocal Music Competition (Spain) First Prize; “Casta Diva” International Vocal Music Competition (Italy) First Prize; “Zandonai” Competition (Riva del Garda, Italy) “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” Prize; “Neue Stimmen” Competition(Gütersloh, Germany) Third Prize; “Zandonai” Competition (Italy) “Mietta Sighele” Prize/ Stadttheater Klagenfurt (Austria) Prize, and Staatstheater Nuremberg (Germany) Scholarship; “Patorzinsky” Competition (Lugansk, Ukraine) Third Prize; “Dvořák” Competition (Karlsbad, Czech Republic) Third Prize and Special Prize for Dvořák arias.
He has attained three master’s degrees from A.V. Nezhdanova Odesa National Academy of Music in Ukraine, Accademia d’Arte Lirica Osimo in Italy, and Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg in Germany respectively. He has also acquired a doctorate from Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg in Germany. Recently, apart from teaching at the Academy of Opera of Peking University, he frequently attends many concerts and well-known music festivals held in Asia and Europe.
